Green Claims Policy
Clarks acknowledges the importance of avoiding making misleading green claims. Greenwashing can be unfair to consumers, unfair to businesses, and undermines genuinely progressive environmental and social action. Avoiding greenwashing is also important to protect Clarks’ corporate and brand reputation, and for compliance in an increasingly stringent regulatory environment.
Clarks will not knowingly mislead consumers through unsubstantiated green claims about products, product lines, initiatives, stores, brands or our wider business. Clarks will actively seek to avoid such misleading through the principles and mechanisms set out in its Green Claims Policy.
While we aim to avoid misleading consumers on green claims, greenwashing can be subjective. As such, should we become aware that a claim might be considered misleading, we will act swiftly to address this, whether by amending or removing the claim, or otherwise addressing any negative impact of that claim as appropriate on a case-by-case basis.
Where we become aware that a claim is considered misleading in a third-party licensed context, we will work constructively with, or seek to influence, the third party to correct the misleading factors.
Clarks has no control over where claims are considered misleading in a third-party context with no business relationship to Clarks. Should such cases arise, Clarks will respond appropriately to protect our corporate and brand reputation.
